A good Dog Trainer - Choose wisely
Its like buying high end food or the budget version ….. Both will "work" … They will both fill you up do their job but one set of food is sooo much better quality than the other.
And your car - you could drive a flashy, high end car or a little, budget run-around … They will both "work" and get you from "A" to "B" but one will be more pleasurable & will be a better quality.
How about the clothes you wear? Or the restaurant you choose? Which Hotel do you stay in?
We should all be doing plenty of research before we part with our hard earned cash but how many of you research your Dog Trainer or the Classes you're intending to join?
What's on your Quality Control list?
Its all very well your Trainer having a list of Certificates but have they ever actually been externally assessed to be sure they know their stuff? Or, doesn't that stuff matter to you?
Maybe they can fix your dogs problem quickly but does that mean they harm your dog in the process? Will they put a slip lead on your dog which chokes them around the throat? A choke chain? Will they squirt water at your dog for getting it wrong? Rattle a can of pebbles to frighten your dog? Does any of that stuff come into it when you decide who should help train your dog?
Is your Trainer well trained / experienced / knowledgeable that they have the ability to actually work on the underlying issues and help your dog emotionally or are they just quickly yanking your dog around the neck without actually fixing the real cause of the problem?
So many questions to ask your Trainer before your hire them but here’s a few of the most important ones:
*Are you externally assessed by any governing body?
*If so, what are the ethics & ethos of that governing body?
*What will happen to my dog if he gets its wrong?
*Will my dog ever feel scared or intimidated during training?
If one Trainer is charging "too much" for their services then maybe its because they at the higher end of the market and offering you a better service.
